Escalator Literature: 2007 Winners

“Escalator 2007 has harvested another crop of top literary talent from the best of East Anglian writers.”
Michelle Spring, Chair of the Selection Panel, 2007

“Getting onto the Escalator scheme ensures that my venture into the crime genre will be as good as I can make it, thoroughly researched and properly presented with a tried and tested mentor who will bring out the best in me.”
Jacqueline Jacques, 2007 winner

Escalator Literature aims to make the Eastern region a major driving force for the development of new arts talent, regionally, nationally and internationally and is open to writers resident in the Eastern region. Each year ten writers in need of support at critical stages in their careers are selected to benefit from the scheme.  They receive personal mentoring from the professional writers on the selection panel, help with an application for a Grant for the Arts and opportunities to hone their skills and extend their contacts within the literary world.

The 2007 winners are:

Kathryn Skoyles: Norwich, Norfolk
Clare Jarrett: Norwich, Norfolk
Caroline Gilfillan: Fakenham, Norfolk
Edward Parnell: Wymondham, Norfolk
Fraser Grace: Great Shelford, Cambs
Susan Sellers: Fen Drayton, Cambs
Katharine Morton: Nr. Royston, Cambs
Guy Saville: Colchester, Essex
Jacqueline Jacques: Buckhurst Hill, Essex
Elizabeth Ferretti: Felixstowe, Suffolk

Three writers were commended:

Nicole Carrel: Norfolk, Christina Crews: Norfolk, Johnny Fincham: Norfolk

“This year we thought we’d open up the list to authors with track records who wanted to step out of their comfort zones and make a change in their writing careers. The ten winners range from brilliant journalists and playwrights, to genre writers and poets champing at the bit to break into literary fiction. With the help of Arts Council England, East, the region’s writers look set to make a big impact over the coming years.”
Chris Gribble, Chief Executive of New Writing Partnership
