What does it mean to be English?

Monday 27 November
The Forum, Norwich
7.30 - 9.30pm
Free entry - booking essential

With Brexit looming, and the rise of nationalism, the notion of Englishness is under the spotlight. Is there a difference between patriotism and nationalism? Can we be English and European? Come and debate with writer and broadcaster Iain Dale, once active in the Conservative Party, and John Denham, once a Labour cabinet minister and now leading the University of Winchester’s Centre for English Identity and Politics. The panel is completed by UEA historian Camilla Schofield, who has written on Enoch Powell and anti-racism in postwar Britain.

Dragon Hall Debates at the Forum

These free events, held in partnership between UEA and Writers’ Centre Norwich, are open to everyone, and no prior knowledge is needed. The speakers will talk briefly and then the audience are invited to ask questions and offer opinions as the discussion opens up.

This year's series will be relocating temporarily to the Millennium Library at The Forum, while Dragon Hall undergoes renovation to open as the National Centre for Writing in summer 2018.

All events start at 7.30pm and should last until 9.30pm, or when the energy dries up!

Free entry, booking essential.
